The Gampaha Botanic Gardens
The Garden was planned in 1876 to introduce Para Rubber to Sri Lankan agriculture by the British rulers. In 1919, FIRST rubber seedlings were imported from the British Royal Botanic Garden Kew and the project was handed over to Mr. .Muhandiram A. de Soyza, who was the first OIC of the Henarathdoda Garden. The trees blossomed in 1880 and from the next year, rubber seeds were distributed throughout the country. Remnants of these first rubber trees are protected as a national monument there. The total area of the garden is about 33 acres and more than 140 years old.
Later, the garden was developed as a standard Botanical Garden by adding and developing new endemic epidemic plants and sections. In the Gampaha Botanical Gardens many of these trees from the 19th century are still available. It is now named as a tropical low country Botanic Garden..
